Just yesterday I drove home from work and stopped by my bee yard. As I looked at the yard activity, I noticed bunch of bees gathered on the ground. I looked closely and saw queen, she was in the middle with bees all around her. As I was changing my clothe she started to wander off but I found her and put her in a queen cage. Leaving cage on the ground I went to start smoker, so I can pull couple of frames with brood from one of the hive. I thought double screen board will be perfect for something quick like this. It works magic for small number of bees to set up on the top of the existing hive. It works well ether in cold or hot weather. Main colony keep up with ventilation and very small split will be very comfortable. So I pulled one frame with brood, honey and empty combs, shook some bees in there and placed queen inside. Closed the hived and walked away.
While I was pulling frames with brood from one of the hive I noticed opened queen cell at the bottom of another frame in this hive. I made a quick inspection and discovered several queen cells. Couple of them we capped and to good to destroy. I saw eggs, about 1 - 3 days old so i did not worry about queen so I destroyed all cell but two. Placed them in the nec next to the one I already have.
Double Trouble
The moral of the story is, the best things happens when we are not around. Visit your bees regular.

As for the queen sells in the nuc, I did not look closely but since queen cells were right at the top I could see. One cell was opened and another one chewed on the side. So I assumed one of the queens came out and rushed to kill another one. I hope we have good enough weather for queen to mate and start laying.
